The growth of excess cells in the breast leads to its cancer. This condition normally begins in the milk-carrying duct, while some cases show origins in the glands when the breast milk is made. When changes occur in the DNA, it can make the normal breast cells become cancerous. While these changes in the DNA could be inherited, it could also be due to one’s habits.

1. Breast Cancer Statistics in the Country
Breast cancer is very common among women in the country. According to the latest stats, 1 in 8 women develop breast cancer and the cause of death among them is most commonly seen due to this cancer in comparison to other types. Other facts about this condition are

  • A man’s risk of getting breast cancer is about 1 in 883, but for women, it is 1 in 8.
  • For women under the age of 45 years, the chances of an African-American woman being affected are higher compared to Caucasian women.
  • The incidence rates reduced in the year 2000 after an increase in the earlier years.
  • A woman’s risk to get breast cancer increases if a relative has had it.

2. Early Warning Signs of Breast Cancer
Many times, individuals don’t notice any signs of breast cancer but there are many warning signs of breast cancer. A few of them are mentioned below.

  • Lump in the Underarm or Breast
    Considered among the first and foremost warning signs, a lump in the underarm or breast should not be taken lightly. One should regularly inspect the area for lumps.
  • Swelling in the Armpit
    Swelling in the armpit could indicate that the spread has happened of breast cancer to the lymph nodes. Hence one should be cautious about it.
  • Pain
    If there is a pain in the lumps formed, this is an indication of early signs of breast cancer.
  • Nipple Discharge
    If one notices nipple discharge while squeezing the nipple, a visit to the doctor is a must. The discharge could contain blood. Also, if the discharge is from one nipple and not the other, it is a matter of concern. At times, there is discharge from the nipple without squeezing it.
  • Structural Changes
    It is advisable to get a mammogram done if you find some structural changes in the breasts. These structural changes could be dimples, any deformation in shape, or any increase or decrease in the breast size
  • Irritation in the Nipples
    It can be a matter of concern if you suddenly find dimples in the nipples or some burning sensation or there is a retraction of the nipples. Also, if red-colored rashes occur, one should get one checked.
